Keeping Up with Privacy Laws

In today’s digital era privacy laws are forever changing. But, it is important to keep up with these laws to provide accurate counsel to our clients. While it may seem like an impossible task to always keep up with these changes, there are steps that we can take to make the learning process a little bit easier for ourselves. Some of these steps include signing up for newsletters, leveraging technology to gain information, utilize collaboration with those who are more up-to-date with privacy laws, and knowing the basics while committing yourself to continue to learn about new privacy laws.

Signing up for Newsletters

One of the best tools that we have at our disposal is newsletters from those that we can learn from. Making sure that we sign up from those who are trusted in our field to give accurate information is key as we do not want to be practicing using bad information. However, once we find the right newsletters they can be a gold mine of information that we do not have to take time to research. With these newsletters, they are often written by experts on privacy laws that will be able to provide case summaries and regulatory updates, and all of that information will be available to look at at our leisure.

Leverage Technology to Gain Information

If you are someone who prefers to do their own research there are plenty of tools that lawyers can use to find updates to privacy laws. Some of these tools include databases such as WestLaw and Bloomberg Law. These are great databases that lawyers can use to find case summaries and regulation updates. Also with these databases you can often set alerts for keywords where it will notify you on any new publishings with these keywords.Utilizing these research tools will help you stay up to date to ensure that you are able to protect yourself, your firm, and your clients.

Utilize Collaboration

Utilizing collaboration with other lawyers to stay up to date with privacy laws is also a very great method to keep yourself informed. Some of the ways you can utilize collaboration is by joining online forums or joining LinkedIn groups with privacy law experts. By joining this group not only will you be in a space where these experts share their knowledge and discuss these regulations but it also offers an opportunity to be able to ask questions directly. These groups will also allow you to get a feel of the direction of privacy laws where you will be able to prepare yourself for any changes that could eventually be made. Direct access to someone with an expertise in privacy knowledge is a great source of information and will make you more comfortable when working in compliance with privacy laws.

Knowing the Basics and Committing to Further Education

Knowing the basics of privacy laws is very important when working with clients, however if you do not make the effort to keep up with changes to privacy laws it could lead to legal challenges. Some of the methods to continue your education of privacy laws include attending webinars and seminars or taking update courses on privacy laws. Utilizing these methods will give you another opportunity to learn from someone who is an expert in privacy laws. Not only will it be a plethora of knowledge but attending in-person events, such as seminars, will give you the opportunity to network with other attorneys. By continuing your education you are ensuring that you will be able to provide the best services to your firm and clients.
